Gustavo Braceria – don’t miss this multi-course culinary experience of Italy – and particularly Puglia – served by Carmela and Gigi in a charming villetta on the edge of town. Ristorante Modò – A contemporary restaurant serving a very original menu that changes seasonally, best local wines and beers, in the centre of Nardò just off Piazza Salandra. Schola Sarmenti – An impressive vaulted winery, wine bar and open-air space in Nardò. Try their Negroamaro and Primitivo wines with a selection of local salumi €15 – €20 from 19.00 until late, or check for evening events in the restaurant/wine bar €35 per head for meal and wine. From thursday to sunday the wine bar is open for wine tasting from 7pm. and the restaurant starts serving an hour later.

Lo Scapricciatello – Huge choice of fresh fish and seafood in an informal outdoor restaurant on the beach. Very popular and busy in the evenings in high season, so expect to join the queue – or you could call by for lunch. Ask for a glass rather than plastic cups. La tana del lupo – Galatina (The wolf’s den) – A very small intimate restaurant in the centre of Galatina’s old town, run by a husband-and-wife team. Via del Balzo 26. Galatina, tel: +39 339 6841750. From €25 per head for endless starters, pasta, main meal, dessert and their own wine.
Anima & Cuore – or – Heart and Soul – in English, is what the owner, Sandro de Pascalis, puts into the running of his aptly named restaurant. In the rooms of a 17th century palazzo next to La Chiesa Madre in the old town of Galatina, fine wine and excellent food is served with care and pride. Corte Santa Lucia – A traditional restaurant in Nardò’s old town serving good, typical Salentine food, the starters are so plentiful that you might need to choose between a main course or dessert.
